Matauri X Incorporation placed parcels of land under agreement with the Department of Conservation. The land is covenanted to be managed so as to preserve the natural environment, the landscape amenity, the wildlife habitat, the freshwater habitat, the historical value of the land and the spiritual and cultural values which tangata whenua associate with the land.
The Minister and the committee have agreed to execute a Ngā Whenua Rāhui Kawenata to provide for the management of the land in a manner that will achieve the purposes described above.
The parties have agreed that the land be managed by the parties hereto with the following objectives:
i. Protecting and enhancing the natural character of the land with particular regard to the indigenous flora and fauna, their diverse communities and their interactions with the environment that supports them;
ii. Protecting the land as an area representative of a significant part of the natural ecological character of its ecological district;
iii. Protecting and enhancing the waahi tapu, cultural and spiritual values associated with the land and its related water bodies;
iv. Embodying the principles of an equal working relationship between the Crown and the tangata whenua with particular acknowledgement to the mana whenua of the Landowner;
v. Protecting the historic, archaeological and educational values associated with the land and its related water bodies;
vi. Maintaining the landscape amenity values of the land;
vii. Providing for the Landowners and their beneficial owners and descendants recreational use and enjoyment of the land to the extent consistent with the above objectives.
The land is covenanted for a period of 52 years. The agreement was signed off in 2004 to end in 2056.
